Finding Your Safe Space: Three Tips to Get You into Action

June 15, 2022

Do you have a safe space? As nurturers, wives, mothers, sisters, professionals, and caregivers, we desire to provide spaces that are conducive to rest,  play, order, creativity, safety, nurturance, and comfort. However, oftentimes, we don’t give ourselves permission to find or retreat to that safe space for ourselves.

Beyond those four walls, we know that each environment we inhabit is directly related to how we steward our own mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. Thriving relationships are built on pillars such as safety, trust, respect, and healthy boundaries that each party contributes in their own unique way. Safe spaces are also about stewarding ourselves so that we can best balance giving and receiving, showing up for others– and showing up for ourselves.  So where do we begin to create spaces that matter and that serve us in the development of optimal health?

  • Prioritize Seeking and Finding a Safe Space for You to Grow in Wellness: No matter where you find yourself it can never be exhausted that the most courageous act you can do for yourself is to ask for help. In order to provide safe spaces for others, we need to prioritize safe spaces for ourselves. This includes assessing what we want and need mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Some key questions you can begin asking yourself is: “Where do I feel safe in each of these areas? Who is accompanying me in these areas?” If you’re seeking a one-stop-shop to address all these needs, feel free to contact us and schedule a free 15-minute consultation to identify how we can best support you with a customized plan.
Journaling is a helpful habit to develop your growth mindset and self-awareness.
  • Get in the habit of journaling: When we’re embarking on a journey of healing, one of the best ways to make progress is to stay consistent with one activity that allows you to stay connected with yourself. Self-Compassionate Inquiry is one therapeutic strategy that enables you to build awareness of your current circumstances in the context of your unique, personal story. Keep in mind as you write, the vision of not only where you may be at, but write with full hope of who you want to become. Create a vision for your life and let your “‘yes’ mean yes and your ‘no’ mean no”.
If you need a boost to envision your ideal environment, go somewhere that best fits that vision. You’re sure to not only be inspired but also renewed.
  • Become aware of how your physiological health is impacted by your environment: When we are in stressful or toxin-filled environments, our bodies react in ways of which we may not be conscious. Whether they are household products, candles, fabrics, or foods that you may consume, checking in with a Functional Nutritionist allows you to bring your personal story and experiences to the table when addressing your physical health. It may be helpful to even be aware of how you feel or think in certain environments. If you find certain thought patterns or habits are no longer serving you, give yourself permission to design an environment that allows you to replace them.

Each of our stories is unique just as we are unique. Therefore, your desires and struggles in this current season are unique to you. As we make space to celebrate Father’s Day, Pride, Juneteenth, and many more holidays this summer, we want to invite you to lean in and consider a safe space to navigate those desires and struggles you are experiencing in your life. Begin anew by seeking and finding a safe space for you.
